Five UGM students have developed Portable Medical Finger Glow (Mediglow) to ease dentists treat their patients. The students are dentistry and engineering students: Silva Eliana Aspriyanti, Ratih Setyawati Zakaria Abdur Rahman, Dennis Atyugrastiwi, Muhammad Belva Ababil.
Silva Eliana said they started the Mediglow following the concerns raised by dentists who find it difficult to treat patients because they have to carry a torch whilst having to carry other tools. “Examining and treating dents are pretty difficult for dentists as they have to carry two tools at the same time,” she said on campus on Thursday (28/5).
The tool they decide to make is a LED tool wearable behind the gloves. “This tool is easy to use and portable, thus dentists can carry it even when doing community service at isolated places,” she explained.
You only need to put on the Mediglow ring or bracelet then wrap it with the medical gloves and you’re set to work. “The bracelet and ring come in different sizes and colours,” said Silva.
Dennis added, Mediglow can also be sterilised using alcohol and ozone and is ergonomics.
With that tool, those students have joined the Student Creativity Programme 2015 funded by the Higher Learning Director General. Mediglow is already available at all Dentistry Faculties across Indonesia in collaboration with the Association of Indonesian Student Senates of Faculty of Dentistry.
“Currently, we’re applying for a patent,” he said.
