UGM Rector, Prof. Ir. Dwikorita Karnawati, M.Sc., Ph.D., and researcher, Dr. Teuku Faisal Fathani, participate in the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) symposium at Kyoto University, 9 - 11 March 2016. On that occasion they presented breakthroughs in efforts to reduce the risk of landslides. Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati and Dr. Teuku Faisal Fathani bring the topic of UGM joint effort with the National Standardization Agency (BSN) and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) in the ISO proposal on Disaster Early Warning Systems of Land Movement.

"Since 2007, UGM has been applying this concept in 40 regencies/cities, 20 provinces in Indonesia and Myanmar," explained by Dwikorita, Thursday (10/3).

According to the Rector, in applying the mentioned concept, UGM cooperated with the Central Government (BNPB, Kemendesa) and Regional Government (BPBD). In addition, the early warning system of land movement has been applied in the workplace of PT. Pertamina Geothermal Energy, PT. Medco International, PT. Arutmin, PT. Inco Sorowako, and at PT Freeport Indonesia. The implementation of an early warning system, said Dwikorita, was in line with the Framework for Sendai Action 2015-2030 with four priorities in disaster risk reduction.

"Four priorities which are knowledge of the risks, warning, monitoring, communication and response," she added. Dwikorita added UGM with BSN and BNPB specially formulated seven major subsystems for early warning ground movement disaster. Seven subsystems, namely risk assessment, socialization, team building for disaster preparedness, evacuation operations manual, preparation of standard operating procedures, monitoring, early warning and evacuation rehearsals and build community commitment and local authorities in the operation and maintenance of the entire system of early warning of ground movement.

Proposal of UGM-BSN-BNPB received positive feedback from the members of the ICL. As an international institution under UN-ISDR UNESCO, ICL  is committed to oversee the process of applying for ISO on the Early Warning System for Land Movement which will undergo the process at the ISO institution for 36 months.

As known, the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) was established in 2001 and currently has 80 members from 50 countries. ICL is one of the strategic programs of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR) UNESCO, especially in reducing the risk of landslides. Since 2011, the UNESCO established World Center of Excellence on Landslide Disaster Reduction and UGM has been elected twice in 2011-2014 and 2014-2017.
