The literary work is one of Islamization tools in Indonesia. The literary work is widely used to teach Islam, especially in the early days.

Adib Sofia, lecturer of Sociology of Religion, Faculty of Islamic Theology and Islamic Thought at UIN Sunan Kalijaga university, said that there are cultural and social facts on the discourse left by the leaders at that time which showed disharmony in religious life. This started by different views between Hamzah Fansuri and Nuruddin Ar-Raniri.

"Cultural phenomenon in the works of Hamzah Fanzuri showed tolerance to live a religious life. While Nurudin Ar-Raniri would indicate strong opposition attitudes toward different views," they explained, Thursday (28/7), at open examination of doctoral program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM.

Sofia said that literature is constructed to express the universal issues, communicating through soul and softening attitude. However, in the works of Nuruddin Ar-Raniri, the literature was used to express strong opposition to the different views.

Defending the dissertation entitled Intolerance in Religious Life: Philology Study and Interpretation of Three Works of Nuruddin Ar-Raniri, Sofia conveys the results of analysis. Of the three works, namely Tibyan fi Ma'rifatil-Adyan, Chujjatush-Siddiq  li Daf'iz-zindiqs, and Fatchul-Mubin 'ala-Mulchidin it is known that there is intolerance in all three literatures. This intolerant attitude is in the form of self-righteous statement, while the groups which have different views are misguided, wrong, equating others with groups having negative stereotyping such as pagan, Zoroastrian, Jewish, pharaohs and other.

"In addition, verbal violence with harsh diction, humiliation, and judgment are found," it was said. Other findings showed the effectiveness of intolerance depends on the use of religious propositions as the basis for legitimacy and support from the authorities. Not only that, the literary works of the past pointed to the fact that is relevant to today's life in a pluralistic society.

According to the person, the existence of Nuruddin Ar-Raniri that can only last 7 years in Indonesia are relevant to current conditions. It shows that intolerance is never appropriate to be applied in Indonesia. (UGM/adelily)
