Faculty of Biology UGM conducted tree planting activities on the Watershed of Pakerisan upstream, Sunday (30/10). The activity was conducted in cooperation between the Faculty of Biology with Gianyar Regency, Bali. Tree planting ceremony was held in Pura Tirta Empul and attended by Chairman of the Environmental Agency, Regional Planning and Development Agency, representatives from regional parliament, representatives from the Tourism agency, a delegation from the Faculty of Biology, and district government officials, and local communities.
Not less than 1090 seedlings of 28 species of plants were given to community of Pakerisan, represented by the residents of Tirta Empul, Manukaya, Pura Mangening, Saraseda and Pura Gunung Kawi. Meanwhile, tree seedlings were donated by the Environmental Agency of Gianyar regency.
Person in charge of tree planting and water conservation, Dr. Retno Peni Sancayaningsih, M.Sc., explained that the tree planting activities aimed to conserve waterin Pakerisan watershed. Faculty of Biology seeks to train the people in the area to be able to take care of the plants there.
“People welcome this activity well. They choose their own type of plants they wish to take care in the future,” said Peni.
Likewise, the team leader of the collaboration between Faculty of Biology and Environmental Agency of Gianyar, Dr. Purnomo, said the tree planting demonstrated the role of the Faculty of Biology in educating people about the importance of taking care of the trees for water conservation. Moreover, this activity also connects the needs of society with government programs. (UGM / adelily)
