Addie MS Memimpin Orkestra Mahasiswa UGM dalam Grand Concert GMCO

Gadjah Mada Chamber Orchestra (GMCO) organised a concert on Saturday (6/5) at Driyakarya Auditorium, Jakarta. Themed Lucid Dream, the concert was a special one as it also presented Indonesian top composer and conductor, Addie MS, as special guest.

Grand Concert is the biggest annual concert hosted by Gadjah Mada Chamber Orchestra. Event chairperson of Grand Concert, Christina Bintang, said the dream that was the theme of this concert was a form of imagination of the unconciousness so that one may randomly experience unlimited phenomenon under various atmospheres and emotions that are recognised by the memory in the real world. These memories are presented by GMCO through the music.

“For the Grand Concert this year, the committee had prepared it since mid-2016 to present amazing musical experience, so when the audience gets home, they bring with them unforgettable memory of the concert,” she said.

She said it was an honour for them to be able to present Addie MS as their special guest in the concert. GMCO also presented Andreas Joko Purwanto, one of the founders of Gadjah Mada Chamber Orchestra, and Puput Pramuditya, musician and music master from ISI Yogyakarta who trains GMCO since 2012.

Addie MS said he enjoyed the opportunity to be able to collaborate with students of UGM who joined GMCO, hoping the concert would serve as the media to introduce orchestras to the public.

“For me, any opportunity to collaborate with educational institutions is a chance to dedicate what I have to spread the love for music to the students,” he said.

He also appreciated the hard work of the students in taking the time to play music alongside their busy academic schedules as students. He commented the extracurricular activity would be beneficial to their character building. Furthermore, he encouraged them to hold similar events in the future.

In the Grand Concert, GMCO performed 13 repertoirs, starting with the Mummy Returns theme song and the Battle of Red Cliff, with conductor Andreas. Addie MS conducted the medley of Mr. Bean – The Simpson. Later, Puput Pramuditya closed the first session, conducting Mission Impossible.

In the second session, GMCO presented repertoirs from popular films, such as Pink Panther, Alexandria, and Dealova. Here, Addie MS became the conductor for two compositions, medley of Ada Apa Dengan Cinta and Di Atas Awan.
