Pill contraceptives is a method widely used (23,58%) in Indonesia by Family Planning participants, the second after injection contraceptives. Many users, however, still lack of knowledge of the pills.
“Research showed that of 60% of pill takers had misunderstood the instruction given by paramedics,” said Ineke Wijayanti, Nursing student of UGM on Thursday (15/6) at UGM.
This happened because the paramedics used medical terms that are difficult to comprehend, less information, and the numerous terms to be remembered by the participants. So, the quality of communication deliverance, information, and education would determine the success of the Family Planning programme.
Ineke said the skills to deliver these matters by professional paramedics had to be trained since at college. This can be honed by using demonstration tools.
“Unfortunately, until now there is no such tool for counselling. This would limit the paramedics, including students, to train using the tools,” she said.
Ineke with her fellow students, Nabila Aulia, Binta FN, and Puput Ayu W, found a solution by making Miniature of Pill Contraceptives (Mikopil) for the Student Creativity Programme for Creativity. Their supervisor is Diah Wulandari, M.Keb.
Ineke said as paramedics, nurses have to be skillful when giving counselling to participants of Family Planning. The Mikopil tool is expected to enable the paramedics and students to train their counselling skills.
“We designed the tool to resemble the real pill,” she said.
Mikopil is equipped with the uterus anatomy to allow participants understand the working system of the pill in the body. It is simple and not bulky, so it is portable.
