UGM Applies Disaster Information Application

UGM Terapkan Aplikasi Informasi Kebencanaan di Desa Rawan Bencana

Directorate of Community Service Universitas Gadjah Mada conducts a program which aims to strengthen disaster risk management in Selopukang Hamlet, Sendang Village, Wonogiri Regency, Central Java Province. This region is one of the locations prone to landslides due to the ground and rock mass movement that has been occurring since a long time causing the risk of damage to land and buildings. The program includes mitigation and mapping of locations and buildings that prone to landslides. “We make disaster-prone areas and houses mapping which have a high risk to be impacted,” said the lecturer at Computer and Electronics Science Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Dr. Mardhani Riasetiawan, M.T. on Monday (2/10).

Mardhani said the event which involves as many as 46 students from several faculties also provide evacuation tracks and gathering points around the village streets that are considered as prone areas.

In addition, the community service program which entitled G-Connect Project: Connectivity for disaster-prone areas also apply an appropriate technology by preparing disaster information control and remote monitoring system by implementing Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud Technology for helping disaster-prone areas. “This application is able to record environmental data and analyze them through the cloud, thus it can produce disaster information for the community,” said Mardhani.

By involving Indonesian National Army (Indonesian acronym: TNI) and Field Instructors from Wonogiri Regency, this community service also conducted socialization and education regarding disaster in the form of presentation and simulation which was attended by as many as 96 elementary students and 80 residents. According to Mardhani, this community service is one of the series of events for implementing the results of research, thus it can give many benefits for the community.
