Universitas Gadjah Mada has proposed Prof.Dr.dr. Sardjito as a national hero. The UGM medical lecturer is seen as having fought hard for Indonesia’s independence through health and education sectors.
This issue was discussed in a regional seminar to submit the proposal on Thursday (25/2) in Senate Hall UGM to gather suggestions to write academic paper on such proposal.
Governor of the Province of Yogyakarta Special Region, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, welcomed the proposal. “I welcome and support the proposal to make Prof.Dr.dr.Sardjito as a national hero,” said Sultan HB X in a speech read out by Vice-Governor, Paku Alam X.
Sultan said the proposal for Sardjito was based on Law No. 20 Year 2009 on Title, Merit, and Honorary Title, particularly article 26 that explains the title granted to someone who has passed away but in their life has fought in sectors to achieve and sustain independence as well as achieve state unity.
“With his immense roles during the independence period, Prof.Dr.dr. Sardjito deserved to be granted the status of national hero. I hope this proposal would result well,” he said.
Rector of UGM, Prof.Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D. Eng., said Prof.Dr.dr. Sardjito was someone who was smart, persistent, and high-spirited in health and education areas. Sardjito had played an active role through health areas since the independence period and afterwards.
“Prof. Sardjito was an alumnus of STOVIA who was highly dedicated and made numerous achievements,” said the Rector.
During the revolution period where everything was limited, Sardjito had supplied medication, vaccines and vitamins for the Indonesian troops. He was also dedicated in education area through the founding of UGM and developing Universitas Islam Indonesia.
Panut said Sardjito had examples and thoughts that had to be sustained and orientated towards humanity. He hoped this would inspire the young generation to dedicate themselves for the state.
“Based on the tremendous fights and sacrifice made by Prof.Sardjito, we would like to propose the national hero status for him,”he said.
