Center For Digital Society (CFDS) of Universitas Gadjah Mada has hosted an interactive discussion, Digitalk. In its 17th edition, Digitalk raises the theme Opposing Radicalism in Digital World, presenting Minardi S.I.P, as resource person. Digitalk run on Tuesday (22/5) in Convention Hall, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM.
Minardi said the presence of social media has brought positive and negative impacts. One of the negative impacts is the spread of radicalism. Citing United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Minardi said there were at least seven types of misuse or social media by radical groups.
“Radical groups have misused social media for propaganda, recruitment, funding, training, planning, spreading of terror, and cyber attack,” said Minardi.
According to Minardi, the great number of misuse of social media by radical groups can be prevented by several means. One of those is to close radical accounts by government. Individuals may also choose information accurately. He suggested people to confirm the information they received before spreading it to others.
“Lastly, let’s ask other people to jointly oppose radicalism so that it will not spread further,” said Minardi.
