Universitas Gadjah Mada continues to increase the number of its professors. Currently, the number of existing professors is not ideal as compared to the number of existing students. The number of professors is 400 people while the number of students is 47,000.
“The number of professors at UGM is not many. Although it is increasing, but not comparable with the number of new lecturers which is at the range between 100-200 people each year,” said Vice-Rector for Human Resource and Asset, Prof. Dr. Ir. Bambang Agus Kironoto, on Tuesday (14/8) in a monthly seminar in Multimedia Room of UGM Main Office held by UGM Board of Professors.
Bambang said ideally a university has as high as 40% of professors of the total lecturers.
“The number of all UGM lecturers currently is 3 thousand people while 400 of which are professors. So, we still need to meet that goal,” he said.
To meet the goal, Bambang said UGM devised strategies, including facilitating international publication process.
“The main barrier in this matter is because the prerequisite for international publications has not been met,” he explained.
Other strategies taken are Operational Procedure Standard for professor applications, training on scientific paper writing, increasing the number of doctoral degree holders, and performance-based intensive schemes for publications and doctoral degree.
Chair of UGM Board of Professors, Prof.Drs. Koentjoro,MBSc., Ph.D., said currently UGM has 311 professors and 89 retired professors. Meanwhile, growth of new professors is relatively low compared to those who retire or pass away.
“Soon we will invite lecturers who are eligible to be processed as professors and find solutions to existing barriers,” he said.
Koentjoro said the number of lecturers who are principal lecturers with doctoral degree is between 300-400, who potentially become professors.
“UGM continues to monitor and encourage these potential lecturers to become professors,” he said.
