Three students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) have developed a product to help people with hearing disabilities who are driving a car.

The idea grabbed the second place award in the Toyota Fun Code Hackathon 2019, beating other 700 ideas.

DEFINO, short for Deaf Assistant of Toyota, has been developed by M. Sulthan Farras Nanz (Management 2016), Antonius Yonanda (Information Technology 2016), and Aditya Laksana Suwandi (Information Technology 2015).

“So, DEFINO is a system that helps drivers of Toyota vehicles, especially people with hearing disabilities, communicate with passengers and see the surrounding condition when driving,” said Farras on Tuesday (5/11).

The system works with digital sound sensors to convert vehicle sounds, horns, or siren into visual and wave signals to improve the driver’s response. Equipped with Visual Communication (VICO) features, it will give interactive communication experiences through visualisation in the tablet installed in the car.

“With DEFINO, Toyota can proactively promote and increase inclusivity of transportation access and economic activities for people with disabilities,” he concluded.
