In a vibrant celebration of culture and camaraderie, the Gadjah Mada Community Inspires (GM) orchestrated a Children’s Festival themed “Exploring Culture: Harmony in the Diversity of the Nation’s Culture” on Nov. 25-26.
This lively event culminated in the GM community’s engagement at Somoitan Elementary School in Sleman Regency.
Organizer head Azkya Kamila shared, “We aim for this cultural theme to serve as a medium to introduce and foster a deeper love for their own culture among the children in Somoitan, instilling pride in their identity as Indonesian citizens.”
Comprising active UGM students from diverse faculties, the GM community is dedicated to character education in elementary schools.
At Somoitan School, these students deliver weekly sessions featuring teaching materials centered around character education, employing diverse and engaging approaches.
“Beyond imparting manners and ethics, we incorporate compelling learning practices. From interactive planting activities fostering a connection between children and the environment to training sessions with firefighters, our goal is to provide joy and inspiration to the children of Somoitan,” Kamila said.
The 2023 Children’s Festival showcased a medley of competitions, artistic performances, and exhibitions, drawing participation from neighboring elementary schools. The event resonated with excitement from students, teachers, and parents alike.
The infectious enthusiasm was palpable in the spirited performances by the students, including a captivating musical drama. Waves of applause and heartfelt words of appreciation rippled through the audience, acknowledging the effort and dedication displayed in each performance.
Kamila reflected on the emotional impact of the day, stating, “The event was quite poignant. As volunteers, we take immense pride in the impressive performances of the children of Somoitan. Witnessing them overcome stage fright, perform with poise in front of a large audience, and maintain consistency throughout the challenging preparation period was truly remarkable.”
Expressing her hopes for the initiative, Kamila aspires to kindle a passion for knowledge and creativity among the students. She envisions the continuation of such activities in the coming years, underscoring UGM students’ commitment to spreading inspiration and making meaningful contributions.
“While we are elated to have successfully instilled deep-seated inspiration at Somoitan, there’s a tinge of sadness as our Saturdays will no longer be the same. We might not encounter these bright faces on those delightful weekends anymore,” she expressed.
“Nevertheless, we believe that the seeds of inspiration planted will continue to flourish and be shared wherever their journeys lead them.”
