Universitas Gadjah Mada has claimed the 56th position in the 2023 Quacquarelli Symonds Asia University Rankings (QS AUR), up three places from last year at 59th. With this standing, UGM is among the top 8% of universities in Asia out of 760 universities assessed on the continent.
“In the 2023 QS AUR, UGM has risen to 56th in Asia and 12th in Southeast Asia,” said Head of Quality Assurance, Prof. Indra Wijaya Kusuma, on Wednesday (16/11).
Eleven indicators used to formulate the rankings are academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, international research network, citations per paper, papers per faculty, staff with a Ph.D., international faculty proportion, international students proportion, inbound exchange students proportion, and outbound exchange students proportion.
Of these indicators, UGM has the highest ranking for academic reputation at 39th, followed by employer reputation at 47th, international faculty at 56th, and inbound exchange students at 69th.
Indra said UGM looked forward to improving other indicators, such as citations per paper, papers per faculty, and staff with Ph.D. The university hopes to increase the number of publications and citations of its lecturers.
It will also open up more opportunities for lecturers to pursue their doctoral education abroad, and recruitment will be aimed at those who have already completed this degree.
“UGM is committed to enhancing its global visibility by improving the learning process and input,” he said.
On 26 October, UGM and Universitas Indonesia were announced as the only two universities from Indonesia included in the QS Sustainability rankings (occupying 281-300 places), featuring 700 universities from 71 countries. The Sustainability rankings measure two indicators, social and environmental impacts.
UGM occupies the 467th position for social impact, with employability and opportunities at 194th, equality at 387th, and life quality, the impact of education, and knowledge exchange at 501+.
The university’s overall ranking for environmental impact is 233, with sustainable education at 80, sustainable institutions at 161, and sustainable research at 501+.
