UGM Chemical Engineering students Andhirta Rukmarata Chaniago and Ali Sulton took home the top prize at the 2022 International Youth Ideas Competition held by the National Battery Research Institute on December 14-15, 2022, in Jakarta.
The duo competed in the paper category, which challenges participants to produce scientific work demonstrating excellence in writing and analytical thinking on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They received guidance from lecturer Dr. Indra Perdana on the study.
Combining the themes of battery and modeling and simulation, Andhirta and Ali aim to determine the design parameters and optimize the sulfuric acid leaching operation (lithium, nickel, manganese, cobalt) of spent NMC-type lithium-ion batteries.
“We won first place because Li-ion batteries are increasingly promising to replace motorized vehicles,” said Ali on Monday (2/1).
Ali hopes this research will help create sustainable production of Li-ion batteries.
