Scientific orientation and dedication of all academic community, including UGM alumni, since its establishment apparently never changed, that is always for the prosperity of Indonesian people and society.
“This point is the spirit of the second part of our Vision; we dedicate ourselves to state’s interest and prosperity based on Pancasila values.†The Rector of UGM, Prof. Ir. Sudjarwadi, M.Eng., Ph.D. said at the opening of UGM Postgraduate graduation ceremony for Specialist, Master (S2) and Doctorate (S3) Degree Period IV 2008/2009 at Grha Sabha Pramana, Tuesday (28/7)
Sujarwadi said, the scientific orientation inspired by the dedication for national prosperity has been highly appreciated by many parties. Thus, it is not surprising if many UGM alumni have gained public trust to occupy strategic positions.
“We are proud of their strategic positions which are gained by the UGM alumni. Besides, we are also proud that not a few of our alumni have high level of dedication for rural areas,†Rector said.
“Recently, after dedicating more than 25 years, dr. Sudanto has not changed. He only imposes 2,000 rupiahs or even free of charge for his patients so that he is very well known by the natives of Abepura and is nicknamed " The Doctor of Two Thousands,†Rector added.
Not only the senior alumni have high spirit of dedication. One of other alumni who are mentioned by the Rector is Ilham Syifa, the alumnus of Sociology postgraduate at Faculty of Social and Political Science who is still 32 years old. According to Sudjarwadi, Ilham succeeded in avoiding temptation to have career in big cities and decided to dedicate his knowledge to his hometown, becoming the chief of Tanjungori village, Tambak Subdistrict, Gresik Regency.
Tanjungori Village is located in Bawean Island, accessible by ferry that takes about 3,5 hours trip from Tanjung Emas Harbour, and only one ferry available every two days. They share electricity and a subsidy amounting to 400,000 rupiahs per month is given every six month, Pak Ilham applies free Identity Card policy for his people.
“Because the poor village inhabitants still consider that he Chief has high salary, so he has to spend his personal money to fulfill his people demands.†the Rector told.
The Rector said that, on the one hand, what the alumni have done had shown the implementation of UGM vision, and on the other hand, UGM apparently has never changed. “Every step that we made, every achievement that we gain, and every acknowledegment that we get, is only for the interests and prosperity of the nation,†said he.
Further Sudjarwadi explained about the Pancasila-based Gadjah Mada values that have inspired the alumni. Those values guide all members of academic community to make international achievement and to have orientation to the state’s interests and prosperity. “Because of those values, during almost the 60 years of UGM existence, we are well known for our low profile characteristics and high performance.â€
