Students of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department of Engineering Faculty of UGM (FT UGM) held an exhibition entitled "Creative Design for Equity 2009" and fund raising for impaired people on Wednesday (3/6) at KPTU Plaza of FT UGM. The exhibition presented various tools specially designed to ease impaired people’s life.
One of the tools was the ‘e-count’, a calculator equipped with an earphone that emits visual and audio output. The calculator was designed for blind people to do scientific calculation. There were also ‘e-varba’ that can help deaf people learning words and objects around them. ‘Vibe ring stick’ is made for blind people and it is a special stick that comes with obstacle detector censor.
The head of the organizing committee Benny Setiawan said that the number of impaired people is not small; however they are often get unfair treatment from the society. Therefore the tools for impaired people are hard to find in the market.
The event which also presented a talk show was a part of the Product Design and Development lecture. Besides giving students knowledge, the event was also aiming to develop students’ social concern, especially for impaired people.
