Prof. Sutarni Inauguration as Senior Professor

Children have a higher risk of exposed by pesticide compared to the adults for several reasons. The internal organ in children’s body is still in the process of maturity. Many works of enzyme, metabolite, and immune system that is still immature.


Prof. Sri Sutarni Sudarmadji conveyed this when she was inaugurated as the Senior Professor of Medical Faculty of UGM on Tuesday (16/6) at the Senate Hall of UGM. She read her inauguration speech entitled "The effect of Toxic Ingredients in neural System: Special Attention to the Effect of Pesticide to Children’s Growth ".


The woman who was born in Surakarta, 17 Desember 1947explained that the toxicity effect of the pesticide is rather low compared to other toxicant. However, the effects are still annoying such as dizziness and nauseated. Long term exposure can result in neurological effect and growth and reproduction disturbance.


She also added that the pesticide can effect on hormones, especially in human’s embryo and children. Pesticide can trigger the disturbance in the early conception process. The embryo gets exposed by pesticide through the mother’s placenta.
