After the basic test of UGM portal operation beginning 18 August, apparently many violations were found, done by those passing the Sumpah Pemuda Street . Although there are prohibition signs to turn right at the end of the street, many drivers disobeyed this.
“For the safety of everyone, starting from Monday, 14 September, the Sumpah Pemuda Street will be functioned one way from west to east to Boulevard area,†Said Dr. Singgih Hawibowo, the Director of Asset Management and Maintenance (PPA), Thursday (10/9), at UGM.
In addition, the wayout of the Boulevard area will be primarily used through the northern part of the UGM Roundabout.. Those driving from the south heading to Kaliurang street can pass the Olahraga Street (north of the Campus Mosque) to the north to the Agro Street (the north side of Faculty of Forestry). This regulation can reduce traffic accidents around UGM and in the future will create the ‘Zero accident†condition.
Singgih mentioned, although many people think that the portal will reduce UGM good image, actually this was not correct. The installation and closing of several gates are aimed to create educopolis campus environment. It is an ideal condition to study in the context of collaborated multidisciplinary development that responds to ecological issues.
The approach taken by UGM is shifting traffic priority around campus from motor vehicle to the orderliness and comfort of pedestrians and cyclists. Comfortable streets for pedestrian and cyclists will be added. Meanwhile, the relocation of food stalls vendors around UGM has been done from west side of Pancasila Street to the “Foodcourt Plasa Campus†area. Sunday morning market has also been moved from Boulevard area to Prof. Notonagoro Street and Olahraga street
To reduce the parking lot traffic around Socio-Humaniora and Socio- Justicia streets, the additional parking lots are being prepared on the east side of Faculty of Law and Faculty of Philosophy. “Therefore, UGM needs supports from society and related Departments to create an Educopolis area in order to produce future national leaders who are strong and responsive towards national problems, “ he closed the interview.
