Natural disasters create a humanitarian tragedy, demolish the economy, and obstruct the development. In the developed or developing countries, the poor ones are the most vulnerable to the impacts caused by the disaster. Therefore, insurance for survivors of disaster is very needed.
"Those who live in disaster-prone areas should have access to preventive efforts during or after the disaster. Being insured is better for reducing and protecting them from risks," a disaster analyst from UGM, Dr. Sudibiyakto, told reporters at UGM Graduate School, Thursday (15/10).
According to Sudibiyakto, disaster insurance system, particularly for natural disasters, is one way designed by the Japanese government to reduce post-earthquake losses.
"Disaster insurance can at least reduce the losses. At least, this insurance is also able to help fund the recovery," said Sudibiyakto.
Some rural communities in the affected areas are poor. In contrast, in urban areas infrastructure damages cost much. The impact of disasters is very broad, covering social, political, economic, environmental and cultural matters as well as science and technology. Multidisciplinary approach is required for disaster risk reduction.
