Lecturer of Faculty of Medicine was Granted Pediatric Award

 
Prof. dr. Sri Suparyati, Sp.A.(K), Ph.D., the lecturer of Faculty of Medicine, UGM,   was granted the Pediatric Award  by the Asian Pacific Pediatric Association (APPA) in an event held from 14-18 October 2009 in Shanghai, China. Prof. Yati explained to the press that she is one of 12 people awarded by the APPA. The award is presented every three years. Candidates are selected from 2500 pediatrics in Asia-Pacific region. Prof. Yati is the only Indonesian pediatric awarded.

Prof. Yati said that she was not surprised. In her opinion, she had been selected due to her performance in diarrhea researches of children for the past 40 years. Her researches have been internationally published.  Prof. Yati started the research in 1976 with Prof. Ruth Bishop from Australia who is the first inventor of rotavirus in the world. They examined rotavirus infection in patients with diarrhea in Indonesia at that time.
 
Following this, Indonesia plans to produce affordable rotavirus vaccines. In cooperation with Melbourne University and PT. Biofarma, it was agreed that the vaccines will be sold in Indonesia in 2012. In 1982, Prof. Yati was known as a researcher who used local wisdom to produce diarrhea drugs. She produced ORT from palm sugar and lump sugar, and tempeh flour to supply protein for those suffering from diarrhea.
 
The Dean of Faculty of Medicine,  Prof. dr. Ali Ghufron Mukti, M.Sc., Ph.D., welcomed the award, which can emphasize UGM position as an international university. According to the Dean, in order to produce more articles in international publications, he will always encourage his faculties to collaborate with foreign researchers and write publications in international journals.
