Two of five students who took a test for other persons in a civil servants’ selection test in Sidrap regency, South Sulawesi, were confirmed to be students of Universitas Gadjah Mada. Both students by the initials of DS and AEW are from Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and Faculty of Pharmacy. Another has been identified as a student from IAIN Bandung whilst two others are not UGM students. “The other two students have been confirmed not to be UGM students,†said UGM’s Director of Student Affairs, Drs. Haryanto, M.Si., to the journalists, Thursday (14/12).
Despite the confirmation, Haryanto said that UGM would not instantly give sanctions to those students as UGM is awaiting for a legal decision from the Court. “We are a law-abiding country. We cannot take measures arbitrarily prior to a legal certainty,†said Sentot, Haryanto’s nickname.
According to Sentot, after the legal certainty, the two students would likely be dismissed from UGM, because students who are admitted to UGM have in advance signed a declaration saying that they are willing to be dismissed if they commit criminal and indecent acts. Sentot said that he was concerned that those students had been tempted to someone else’s persuasion and they were manipulated for their intellectuality. “We’re concerned that students are still eager to find a shortcut for a fee of around 10-12 million,†Sentot said.
In response to this, UGM sociologist, Prof. Dr. Sunyoto Usman, said that the case where students take a test for someone else because there is a chance that is manipulated by job providers and applicants. “Between applicants and job providers there is a gap (that some people think can be fulfilled by) the academic world. The gap is made use by those who can do the test,†he said. According to Sunyoto, in this case students have been used to fill the gap in the mass recruitment system. “People rely too much on students as they are considered elitists,†he added.
