As many as 40 innovative works of Engineering Physics students of Universitas Gadjah Mada were exhibited at the Faculty’s KPTU Plaza, Monday (21/12). Their works were unique and new. One of those was the alarm clock that acts as insect repellent. It can repel mosquitoes by emitting ultrasonic waves based on required time. “This device works on 50 kHz ultrasonic waves that can be increased up to 100-150 kHz as required and it will not disrupt sleep,†said Erika, member of the ABK team from Engineering Physics Department.
Erika and friends were one of 40 student teams who were displaying their innovative works. The self-funded innovation was to create real work that can be used by people and directly benefit them.
“Actually, only 20% of ideas can turn into reality. Through this exhibition, we hope that they can realise their ideas and works,†said event innitiator Prof. Ir. Sunarno, M.Eng., Ph.D., Monday (21/12). Sunarno said that students realised their ideas of the five lectures they had taken, Digital System, Nuclear Electronics, Computer-Based Instrumentation and student final assignment. Sunarno added that all innovative works were based on computer, controller system and PSoC (Programable System on Chip).
One of their innovations has gone on sale and is utilised by Faculty of Medicine, UGM, which is the arm muscle monitoring system device to determine fitness. “This device is used by specialists for their research, a lab skill to train doctor candidates, and it costs between 8-15 million,†he explained.
Hendrick Ferdinand, the chief of the event committee, said that other works on display were automated parking system, display of drinks order and solar park lamp that lights at night. “This exhibition can develop the spirit to innovate among students,†he said.
