The demand for professional doctors who work professionaly based on medical ethics increases, not only domestically but also globally. Therefore, practicing doctors should avoid medication errors to avoid mortality.
“Today, there is a shift of opinion of the profession. Following the case of Omni hospital and other cases, although it is not dominated by relationship between patients and hospitals, similar problems have also been found globally,†said Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Gajah Mada, UGM, Prof. dr. Ali Ghufron Mukti, M.Sc., Ph.D., in inauguration of 93 new doctors, Wednesday (6/1/2010) at Grha Sabha Pramana, UGM.
Ghufron said that errors are not a rare occurence in medical world. According to Ghufron, in the USA annually there are at least 183 thousand mortality cases because of medication errors. In Indonesia the number possibly is fewer because no report and research to prove it, he joked.
To the newly inaugurated doctors, Ghufron asked them to always obey the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in treating patients. He also suggested them to always respect their medical oath and ethics as well as university. He further expected the new doctors to always learn from the Internet and various educational methodologies, such as short courses, master and specialist programs. “This inauguration is not the end of the journey but a start to dedicate yourself for your country in improving society’s level of health,†he said.
Chairman of Indonesian Doctor Association (IDI) of Yogyakarta Special Region, dr. Bambang Suryono Suwondo, Sp.An., KIC, said that the number of Indonesian doctors is 80 thousands, however, the state provides no welfare security for doctors. Doctors should then be able to make good use of the opportunity and maintain good contact with the people. "Currently there are around 80 thousands of doctors. You’re not spoiled and you’re assigned at difficult situations, therefore, you should be able to identify problems and opportunities," he added.
Meanwhile, Head of Health Agency of the Province, dr. Bondan Agus Suryanto, S.E., M.A., in his opening speech said that the profession of doctor is still considered a noble one by people. A doctor is even considered knowledgeable about many things. Therefore, a doctor needs not only to be well-equipped with ethics, profession, science and practices, but also broadening knowledge in many fields outside medical field. “Sometimes many unpredictable questions are raised by members of society outside medical science. The doctor is considered knowledgeable. Therefore, they need to explore themselves in science and technology,†he ended.
