Prof. Ida Bagus Agra Passed Away

Universitas Gadjah Mada’s big family was grieving because Prof. Dr. Ir. Ida Bagus Agra, one of the best professors  passed away on Sunday, 10 January 2010, at Panti Rapih Hospital, Yogyakarta. The Emeritus Professor of Faculty of Engineering UGM was 78 years old.

Yesterday, Monday, 11 January 2010 at 10.00 o’clock, the body of Prof. Ida Bagus Agra who was once Deputy Dean II of the Faculty between 1963 to 1964 was laid at UGM Hall to get last respect from UGM academic community. At 11.00 o’clock, the body was cremated and followed by a ceremony of ash scattering in Yogyakarta South Beach in the evening.

Many colleagues came to UGM Hall to send condolences to the family. Also attending were University and Faculty Leadership, teaching staff, academic staff, and students. Educational field, particularly chemical engineering science, certainly has missed one of the best figures. “On behalf of all members of UGM academic community, I extend my deep condolences to the family of Prof. Dr. Ir. Ida Bagus Agra,” said UGM Rector, Prof. Ir. Sudjarwadi., M.Eng., Ph.D, opening the funeral ceremony.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Ida Bagus Agra was inaugurated as the professor of Faculty of Engineering UGM on 19 January 1983 with inaugural speech entitled “The Role of Chemical Process”. His speeches and various researches showed that he had already made great scientific contribution to the nation and country, and particularly the field of Chemical Engineering.

According to the Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ida Bagus Agra was an expert of Chemical process who paid great attention to the environment. During his life, he had conducted many researches about agricultural waste processing, industrial waste utilization, plastic waste management, etc. “Hopefully his knowledge and model can be learned by his students,” added the Rector.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Ida Bagus Agra was born in Gianyar, 24 January 1931, finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, UGM, in 1958, and Doctoral degree in Engineering Science, UGM, in 1981. During his time at UGM, he was Secretary at Faculty of Engineering (1971-1972), Secretary at Research Institute (1974-1982), and Head of Research Institute (1982-1990). The former Head of UGM Chemical Process Laboratory left his wife, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sri Warnijati Agra, and son, Ida Bagus Baskara, S.Sos., M.M., and a grandchild.
