Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), will re-hold National Geography Olympiad for Senior High Schools from 10-11 February. Some 70 teams from 48 Senior High Schools throughout Indonesia will participate to win trophies from Minister of National Education, Governor of Yogyakarta Special Province and UGM Rector. The Olympiad this time has the theme “Geography in Implementation of Natural Resource Management and Environmental Sustainabilityâ€.
Saddam Husein, a member of the comittee, explained that this was aimed to provide the discourse for all participants and people in general about geographical concepts that contribute to decision making and handling of environmental problems. That was done by instilling awareness about geography’s role in relation to natural resource management and harmonization of human environment. “For the future, geography is expected to be implemented in every activity related to natural resource management and harmonization of human environment,†Saddam wrote in a press release, Thursday (4/2).

Besides the Olympiad, there will also be Geography Championship for Junior High Schools throughout Yogyakarta (8/2), Workshop of Application of Geographical Information System in Maximizing Regional Resource (8-9/2), and Earthernal Fair with the theme “Save Our Local Culture†(9-10/2).

Some 15 teams from Junior High Schools in Yogyakarta will participate in the Geography Championship. Meanwhile, the workshop and training of remote sensing and geographical system of information will be given for geography teachers of Senior High Schools. Next, in the Fair, many local cultures of Yogyakarta, including batik, handicraft, and foods from Sleman, Bantul, Gunung Kidul, Kulon Progo and Yogyakarta Municipality, will be exhibited. Dances, poem recital, and theatre performance by Teater Bumi, Bengkel Kesenian Geografi, will be also presented. Â Â Â Â Â
