If we look at the riverbed of Code River in the 70’s, the condition was very much different from today’s. Many people made use of the river for their daily lives. But, now the River is relatively unusable due to household wastes.
The intention of the people living around the riverbed to create the “River Code free of waste†goal has urged the Forum Code group and universities to sit together and discuss the “Zero Waste in River Code Year 2010†target.
In the Forum held at the Magister Building of Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), on Thursday (4/2), emerged an idea to launch the “Coin for River Code†that will be launched on 21 March with the aim to raise people’s awareness about maintaining River Code and develop its sustainability. “The main target is not on how many coins will be collected, but the awareness to keep the river free from wastes,†said Dr. Ing.Ir. Agus Maryono, Program Chairman from the Faculty, who is also Chairman of the coin collection program.
Agus added that the program involves several universities in Yogyakarta, including UGM, UAJY, UII, STPMD, APMD and Poltekes. Plans are that this program can be made a model for other regions in developing similar programs on how to resolve water sustainability.
