Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and National Family Planning Coordinating Agency (BKKBN) of Yogyakarta Special Province work together to implement welfare program called "Improvement of Family Welfare" through UGM’s Community Empowerment Program Field Practice (KKN PPM UGM).
This was the point in the signing of MoU between the Family Planning office of Yogyakarta branch and UGM, Thursday (11/3), in the complex of Kepatihan Yogyakarta. The signing was carried out by the Head of BKKBN of the Province, Dra. Sri Arkandini, M.M., and Dr. Irkham Widiono, representing the Head of LPPM UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Danang Parikesit, M.Sc. It was witnessed by the Vice Governor of Yogyakarta, KGPA Paku Alam IX, and Deputy Head of Family Planning- Reproductive Health, dr. Neli Nangoy.
Following the signing was the regional working meeting on population development and family planning in Yogyakarta Special Province. To reporters, Dr. Irkham Widiono said that the purpose of this MoU is to enhance family welfare of rural communities through a participatory program that will be determined by comprehensive study and local potential. "It is expected that local initiatives, competitive capabilities and access to banking for families will arise," said Irkham.
In her report, Sri Arkandini said that family economic empowerment activities cover as many as 81,773 families. Of this figure, 50,052 are poor families. Arkandini also briefly mentioned that there were 50,876 new family planning participants in the province in 2009, or 106.01 percent from the previous target of 47,991. Implementation of this program in the Province was successful as shown by the prevalence of family planning from 78.03 % in 2008 to 78.65% in 2009.
