Faculty of Medicine UGM inaugurated as many as 72 new doctors (37 male and 35 female) in its international program. Until now, the Faculty has produced  6,978 doctors. According to the Dean, Prof. dr. Ali Ghufron Mukti, M.Sc., Ph.D., doctor's education is different from that of other profession, where academic education and professional education are integrated in a first level education system.

“The responsibility of a doctor is related to being healthy and sick, human's life, therefore, it is normal if the length of time for this education is long,” said Ghufron, Monday (15/3) in the Auditorium of the Faculty.

In the Netherlands, he said, co-assistant program takes 3 years to complete.  In Indonesia, competence test is held by the Indonesian Doctors Collegium. Certificates will be awarded to new doctors who pass. After  that, they can submit Registration Card. Those who wish to run profesional practices should submit Practicing Permit to the related Health Agency.

“The long process and the Law proved to be real efforts in increasing medical services and in giving legal certainty to the people and the doctors themselves,” he described.

Chairman of Association of Indonesian Doctors of Yogyakarta Branch, Dr. Bambang Suryono Suwondo, said that doctors who practise their profession will be tempered by the community while the Association will guide and monitor them in updating their expertise and observing ethics.

Bambang said that doctors should behave based on morale, oath, ethics and existing regulations. “A doctor should always become a low-profile role model, who is polite and has good discipline,” he suggested.

Chairman of Health Agency in Yogyakarta, dr. Bondan Agus Suryanto, SE., MA, reminded people about the inevitable competition with the flow of foreign doctors, “As a member of the WTO, Indonesia is a potential market for the world community,” he said. To minimise foreign doctors, Indonesian doctors should improve their capacities equal to the the foreign doctors'.

The Faculty also inaugurated 14 new dieticians in the 6th batch. So far, 101 dieticians have been produced.
