Kyoto Protocol is an international legal instrument that was made to regulate developed countries in order that they reduce their carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. In its implementation, the Protocol has not run effectively. It should have role in managing environmental problems, but apparently it has no influence on controlling disasters due to global warming and climate change.
“This phenomenon is the failure of the international regime of Kyoto Protocol. The US with their big contribution to carbon emissions is unwilling to ratifty the Protocol, which makes the Protocol useless,†said Fatkurrohman, S.I.P., M.Si., lecturer in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of UGM on Monday (29/3) at UGM. The statement was delivered during a book review held in the Faculty in cooperation with Komahi student association.
Fatkurrohman said in the launching of his book entitled Global Warming and Ozone: Future Disaster that economic and political interests have made the US unwilling to ratify the Protocol. This is related to their economic growth that has been much supported by their transportation sector. The US refused to ratify for fear that it would disrupt their economic stability.
The fact should be made a lesson for all countries to have cooperation in the efforts to succeed the Protocol. “When countries can play a good role in resolving issues due to global warming, at least they have prepared benefits for the future generation to live better,†he said.
