Yogya(KU)- Many cases of children death in hospital occur in the first 24 hours after they came to the hospital. Several of those can actually be prevented if severe cases can be immediately identified and be treated without delay.
Moreover, many patients in many hospitals around the world are not identified before doctor comes to diagnose, so they should wait long before getting examination and treatment. They will die in the condition that can actually be treated.
“The idea about guidelines of children emergency service in level I hospital reference (Type C and D) is very important to prevent children’s death,†said the lecturer of Nursing Study Program, Fitri Haryanti, SKp., M.KEs, in open examination of Doctoral Program of Medical and Health Sciences at Auditorium of Faculty of Medicine, UGM, Thursday (8/4). The lecturer emphasized that nurse’s competence in assessing emergency symptoms is very important. A nurse is often in a condition where the doctor is unavailable, so she should make first assessment of the patient and give treatment of emergency.
“A nurse should also be able to assess which patient should be helped first based on the emergency level,†said the lady born in Jakarta, 2 December 1968. The lecturer explained that competence of emergency nurse is a skill that should be owned. This is not a procedure of action, but nurse competence should be followed and conducted based on standard operating procedures,†explained the mother of two children.
Based on her dissertation research result that was conducted in Training of Integrated Management of Healthy Toddlers in Cut Nyak Dien Hospital, Aceh, the training gave new knowledge and skills for nurses to do their daily work. The evaluation of the training level 4 showed that the patient’s satisfaction on nurse’s service is particularly in their skill to measure temperature, monitor patient, give injection and measure blood pressure and care to patient’s pain.
Co-promoter Prof. dr. Sri Suparyati Soenarto, Sp. A(K)., Ph.D., said that with the success in the exam, Fitri is expected to improve nursery knowledge. “The knowledge of skills, attitude and behavior of nurse that are taken from the research should be spread widely to society, particularly in areas vulnerable to disaster,†said the co-promoter. Meanwhile Prof. dr. Ali Ghufron Mukti, M.Sc., Ph.D., chairman of examiners, mentioned that Fitri graduated as UGM’s 1193rd doctor with cum laude distinction.
