Yogya (KU) – Nursing Science Study Program, Faculty of Medicine UGM, Thursday (15/4), inaugurated 23 new nurses, comprising 13 men and 10 women. Until now, UGM has inaugurated 1022 new nurses. The best graduate was Vivi Retno Intening, S. Kep., Ns., with GPA of 3.94 while the youngest graduate was Sabila, S. Kep., Ns., who graduated at the age of 22 and 11 months.
The Dean of the Faculty Prof. dr. Ali Ghufron Mukti, M.Sc., Ph.D., proposed that a new nurse education graduate is expected to have the professional academic ability to manage quality nursing care, both in hospitals health service, community, educational institutions and managerial capabilities in the field of nursing. "New nurses can make the difference, because they are supposedly able to overcome the challenges of work whether in the hospitals or other health care services," said Ghufron after inaugurating new nurses in Ismangoen Building, UGM. According to Ghufron, nurse is a leading profession in the healthcare in many countries. Moreover, the number of nurses in the world is still very minimal. "Japan alone needs 1000 nurses from Indonesia, let alone Australia and the Middle East countries. Imagine, in the Philippines, many doctors switched profession to nurse in order to be able to work in Europe and America," he said.
Chairman of Indonesian National Nurses Association (PPNI) of the Province of Yogyakarta Special Region, Drs. Kirnantoro, SKM, M. Kes., explained nurse graduates are expected to become a model of health service able to ward off a variety of negative assumptions in the community. "I am concerned that there are people who think nurses have been losing his/her empathy. Even there is an assumption in the hospital circle that there is no difference between a nurse who graduated from D3 and a bachelor of nursing," he added. Not only that, added Kirnantoro, there is also another assumption that the higher education the more distant the nurse services for patients. "These problems must be overcome by nurses in the field," he asserted.
Chief Medical Officer of the Province, Dr. Bondan Agus Suryanto, S.E., M.A., in his speech read by a Medical Office staff stated that current developments in nursing world go along with the development of science and technology that are based on the database. In fact, the pattern of health services has been through a telecommunications medium that demands skill and attitude competencies. "New nurse should follow the developments of the nursing discipline to provide better health services," he said.
