Yogya (KU)- As many as 40 teams of 74 from many universities passed the selection of Indonesian Rocket Competition (Korindo) 2010. Those 40 teams are planned to follow the launch in Pandansimo Beach, Srandakan, Bantul Yogyakarta Special Province by the end of June 2010. “Forty selected teams will participate in the launch and final presentation stage,” said a member of the committee, Dr. Jayan Sentanuhady, during the Korindo Workshop 2010 on Sunday (25/4) in the Auditorium of Faculty of Engineering UGM.

The Indonesian Rocket Competition 2010 is the third one conducted in cooperation between Directorate of Research and Community Service, Directorate of Higher Education (DP2M DIKTI), National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), UGM, Air Force Academy (AAU), and Bantul Government. According to Jayan, assessment criteria consist of four stages: proposal selection, pre-qualification, launch and final presentation.

Jayan added that the aerospace technology-based competition aims to garner student interests and achievements in designing rocket load system. By holding this event routinely, it is expected to become a medium of creativity and innovation. That can create competition atmosphere to continue research and development of Indonesian aerospace technology which implicates the national advancement.

Previously, Director of DP2M DIKTI, Prof. Ir. Suryo Hapsoro Tri Utomo, Ph.D., opening workshop entitled “Homing Meteo Payload” said that the student-developed rocket is very important for rocket technology independence in the future. “Synergy between students and competent institutions can be used to develop technology and defense,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of Center for Applied Aerospace Technology of LAPAN, Dr. Rika Andiarti, revealed that Korindo is one of the media to increase students’ interest in rocket technology. Moreover, in year 2014. LAPAN plans to launch an Indonesian-made satellite using local material.

Dean of Faculty of Engineering UGM, Dr. Ir. Tumiran, expected that the cooperation between several institutions involving students in this competition will benefit the public. “UGM will fully support the event because rocket technology development can benefit the people, especially that UGM was the pioneer of student-made rocket development,” he said.
