Photography is one of the medium that can be used to convey the message to the public. In order that the message can reach its audience, it takes a sharp eye to catch an event and mastery of photography techniques. In addition, the exploration of the object uniqueness becomes very important to obtain maximum results.

That was presented by Saraswati, Photovoices Program Coordinator, Tuesday (4/5), in the photography workshop at the American Corner Room, UGM Library. The event was organized by the UGM Library’s American Corner in cooperation with Photovoices International and the United States Embassy, Jakarta.

Syahrirsyah, West Kalimantan WWF Communication Officer, said the utmost photo results can be obtained if a person has sufficient knowledge about the material/object, knowledge about photography, including shooting techniques and camera handling, as well as sufficient time. "If those three things are met, it will create high quality photographs," he explained.

According to the UGM Library’s American Corner Coordinator, Nur Cahyati Wahyuni, in addition to the photography workshop, there will also be photo exhibitions held for three days from 5-7 May 2010. The photographs on display are the best photographs of Photovoices Program. They were taken by local people depicting the culture, biodiversity, and customs of their local community.

Afterward, there will be a panel discussion entitled Voices from the Archipelago held on Wednesday (5/5) at UGM Library Unit 1. The discussions will present four speakers, namely Tristram D. Perry, Public Diplomacy Officer, U.S. Embassy Jakarta, who will discuss The Uniqueness and Biodiversity of Indonesia, Naneng Setiasih M.Si., M.Sc., Director of Reef Check Indonesia Foundation who will present Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Climate Change. After that, Ann McBride Norton, Photovoices International Director, will describe the Strengthening the Community in Decision Making through Media Photography, and Mona Monica, Public Relations Manager of PT Microsoft Indonesia, who will present the topic of Intellectual Property Right (IPR).
