OGI Team of UGM Geology Department succeeded to be the champion in Indonesian Geology Olympics held by the Student Association of Padjajaran University (Unpad) from 25-29 April. The runner up was from Unpad and the third winner was from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
The team consisting of five students of Geology Engineering Department succeeded to defeat 10 teams from ITB, Unpad, National Development University (UPN), Trisakti University, Pakuan University, and Hasanudin University. The five students were Aryo Rakhmanto, Anwar Sadat, Pradipta Gora Kusuma, Risfan Hasnur, and Rosmelia Cipta.
Aryo Rakhmanto, team leader, said that in the Olympics, each team conducted analyses in four categories: geo-technology and mining, petroleum, paleontology, and petrography. In the geo-technology competition, they were given the case to produce a stable slope design in the construction of road with critical slope, to produce rock mass rating and slope mass rating analysis to determine condition, feasibility and solution for tunnel design in mining excavation. In the mining competition, the test was to analyse the distribution pattern to determine where the good region is to explore.
Further, in the petroleum competition, Aryo added that each team determined the micro-fossil to analyze sedimentation environment, age, and biostrat. While in the paleontology competition, regional analysis was conducted to explore the potential. In the end, they conducted stone determination in the petrography competition.
Aryo explained that the key to success of his team was they did not only conduct a simple analysis on the case, but also risk and solution analysis. He did not see those in other teams.
Meanwhile, Rosmelia Cipta representing her friends expressed her happiness for the achievement. “We were glad and proud because we were able to secure the championship for four years in a row,†she said. She mentioned that previously UGM Geology Department’s team with different members also became the champion in Indonesian Geology Olympics held in Unpad (2007), ITB (2008) and UPN (2009). “Actually, we had been under pressure to secure the title, which was the expectation of everyone. With hard work, we finally came out first, meeting everyone’s expectation,†she ended.
