"MAKRON", Lobster Feed

Still in the same competition, three students of Fisheries Department of Agriculture Faculty of UGM won the third prize after producing lobster feed. Dodik Resianto, Isna Nurlaily, and Rahayu Martaning Tyas created the feed under the label of MAKRON (Maccrobrachium rosenbergii Nutrition).  They were concerned with the problem faced by farmers with the increasing feed price while the selling price of lobster is stagnant. These students tried to develop qualified and affordable feed.

They utilized organic waste such as shrimp shells, tempeh and tofu waste. They applied waste fermentation technology and added cassava flour as wheat flour substitute in order to get animal protein. Applying eco-friendly waste processing brought them the best process award.

Dodik Resianto said that the resulted product has strength where protein content is adequate for lobster’s growth with crude protein amounts to 30-32%, feed physical performance for lobster is good. Besides, using local material will make it affordable compared to other products in the market. The feed price is Rp6,500/kg while other product is around Rp7,500 – 8,000/kg.

He said that 1 kg of their product is made from 1 kg of organic waste. “It needs half raw material than other products in market. Generally, the lobster feed needs 2 kg of raw material to produce 1 kg of feed,” he explained. Further he said that currently the product resulted is only able to meet the need in the surrounding location. However, with the guidance of intermediation institution through the PI-IMKM BPPT 2010 program, the amount of production is expected to increase.
