A monologue entitled Wanci managed to become the winner in the district level selection to get to the National Student Art Week (Peksiminas) X selection which will take place from 24 to 29 July 2010 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. In the selection that was held on June 16, UGM which is represented by Welcy Fine (Department of French Literature, class of 2009) with her Wanci monologue outclassed the competitors who came from several universities in the province of Yogyakarta Special Region. "There were about eleven teams from several universities in the province participating in the selection. Finally, of the three UGM teams, UGM Wanci monologue managed to become winner and will represent the province in the upcoming Peksiminas X," said the director of "Wanci", Heri ‘Ucil'(alumnus of the Department of Mechanical Engineering UGM, class of 1999). He added that actually besides "Wanci", UGM also sent two other students, namely Khamdan Primandaru (Faculty of Forestry, 2006) with a monologue entitled Mask and Firdaus Tegar Firmanto (Department of Indonesian Literature, 2007) performing Tricks. However, both were eliminated in the selection yesterday. "Of the three monologue teams, only Wanci won it," he explained.
Meanwhile, Welcy Fine who performed the 15 -20 minute monologue admitted that she was quite surprised with her results. Although already active in the Theatre of Gadjah Mada, it was her first time to perform a monologue. "Pretty surprising because it was my first play. Besides, my competitors are also senior and experienced enough," said Welcy. In addition, the preparation time for the selection at Universitas Kristen Duta was only five days.
Welcy is also optimistic to be able to reach the champion in the upcoming Peksiminas X. At the moment, she continues to work hard, especially to tweak her vocals which still sound as a child’s voice. "I portray a 30 years old woman, but my voice is still like that of a child. Other than physical work, I also have to train my vocals. However, I have to be optimistic to win," said the university student born in Payakumbuh, West Sumatra, May 27, 1992.
Peksiminas (National Student Art Week) Event aims to improve the student’s quality and practice capabilities of developing appreciation towards the arts, including audio-art, performance art, writing of literature, fine arts, and others. The first Peksiminas was held in Surakarta in 1991. In addition to the monologue, painting, writing short stories, as well as dangdut, pop, and keroncong singing competitions are also contested.
About Wanci, in broad outline this monologue tells the life journey of a woman named Icih Prihatini who wants to get out of the dark family life. Her father and mother are pimps. Icih became a dancer to be able to get out of the dark circle before finally getting married and having three children. But in her marriage, the dark life of Icih’s family still haunts her. The husband who claimed to work as a security guard was also a pimp. Her daughter was raped, while his eldest son went to prison for beating up the rapist to defend his younger sister. Furthermore, her daughter had to become a prostitute in order to release her brother from prison. Finally, in the story, Icih has to go with her daughter before getting eventually separated because people considered them insane.
