UGM Library along with UGM Office of Archives held a workshop on Management of Libraries and Archives from 29-30 July 2010. The workshop held at UGM Library presented speakers Justin Joque and Christine Murray (graduate students of Information Sciences, University of Michigan USA), Head of UGM Office of Archives, Drs. Machmoed Effendhie, M. Hum, and Drs. Ida Fajar Priyanto, M.A, Head of UGM Library.

The attractive workshop attempted to integrate library science and archive science, and introduce them as part of Information Sciences. In a paper entitled Introduction of Digital Environment, Ida Fajar Priyanto stated the current Library and Archives not only include books, but also audiovisual, micro and digital forms. Therefore, in order to function optimally, the Library need special and different handling and maintenance. "Therefore, the Intellectual Property can be utilized longer," he said.

In its broadcast of the breaking news, TVOne, for example, called the audience’s attention to the fate of Japanese people, presenting the disaster as an act of God that even a developed country cannot withstand.

By presenting this message, television failed to provide viewers with a critical view of what was really happening and how one might survive in a similar situation. This moral judgment, strongly held by Indonesian television, is not only because of their lack of perspective but also because TV stations are locked into their business models. They reduce disaster stories to a commodity therefore it is okay to exploit it is driven by consumer demand.

As Indonesian television competes with the expanding role of the Internet in reporting disasters, it is unlikely that the medium will support emergency relief, let alone recovery programs.

At the last session of the workshop, Christin introduced open source software to cite various writings correctly. He said this issue is very important for librarians and students, because in the United States one of the tasks of librarians is to guide students to be able to quote the reference correctly from reading sources.

From this workshop, the archivists and librarians in the United States and Indonesia are expected to gain different knowledge and experience. They are also expected to be able to obtain and provide the knowledge and training for the librarians and archivists for handling documents and library materials in order that those can be used optimally for a long time.
