Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Gadjah Mada in cooperation with Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) held an international seminar entitled Chemoprevention for Health Promotion and Beauty on Saturday (9/10). The seminar aiming to explore the potential of natural ingredients and synthetic results to prevent cancer as early as possible also received support from Nara Istitute of Science and Technology (NAIST), ISCC, and Larissa Aesthetic Center.
Several speakers were present in this seminar, including Prof. Dr. Sri Noegrohati, Apt. (Faculty of Pharmacy UGM), Prof. Dr. Hiroshi Itoh (NAIST, Japan), Prof. Dr. Evamarie Hey Hawkins (Leipzig University, Germany), and Dr. Med. dr. Indwiani Astuti (Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada). "In this seminar we discuss how to prevent cancer with safe ingredients because we know cancer drugs affect beauty," Dr. rer. Nat. Endang Lukitaningsih, M.Sc., Apt., committee chairman, explained.
Balikpapan Prosecutor’s Office in East Kalimantan said Wednesday the son of the city mayor, Dimyatie Reza, would soon stand trial for his alleged drug abuse, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in jail.
Yohanes Priyadi, head of general crime division at the office, told tempointeraktif.com that the office had handed over the dossier of the case to the local district court and has formed a team of prosecutors for the case.
Dimyatie, son of the mayor Imdaad Hamid, was arrested early in October, with two other men, when they were caught taking crystal methamphetamine (locally known as shabu-shabu) by police officers in Stal Kuda area.
Endang conveyed that everyone hopes that the compounds which are currently being developed would kill the cancer cells only. But unfortunately, the patient undergoing treatment is already in worse condition. "The therapy is applied when the cancer is already advanced. We hope that the compounds are able to prevent cancer as early as possible," she said.
She admitted, the compounds from natural and synthesis materials are still developed at the laboratory. Even so, these antioxidant compounds have provided evidence as suppressor of cells contraction. Therefore, these compounds are able to suppress abnormal cell division in patients. "Cancer cells are spreading very fast. The current compound is already on the market. The source can come from the sea, such as coral reefs or algae. This kind of material is believed to have the compounds that are able to prevent cancer," Endang explained.
