UGM-Baznas Build Temporary Shelter for Merapi Survivors

Head of Cangkringan sub-district, Samsul Bakri, expressed his gratitude for the construction, particularly for Bakalan residents whose homes had been destroyed. They have occupied the site since Monday. In addition to the temporary shelter, Samsul added, he hoped that UGM can help find a solution to livelihoods, such as farming, livestock breeding, and sand mining.

Mournful background music adds to the feeling of melancholy as we watch

the suffering of the victims. On talk shows, local television stations

invited so-called experts and sources who produced a lot of speculation,

offering the audience chaotic and often conflicting reports.

The

exaggerated coverage of the disaster on Indonesian television is a

prime example of how the media are scrambling for content to attract a

larger audience.

Instead of focusing on disaster mitigation by

giving correct information, television has opted for a melodramatic

presentation.

There is a thin line between the news and

entertainment media. Rather than providing the public with information

on the emergency response, the media has produced a steady stream of

news that has been exploitative.

In a symbolic establishment ceremony of this shelter, the people were entertained with music performance by Kandang Jurang Doank led by Dick Doank.
