UGM students continuously made achievements. The achievement this time was gained by Lisa Novita Anggraeni, student of Faculty of Biology and her two friends from Industrial Engineering Department V.
Reza Bayu K. and Ana Yunita Masura were the runner-up in The 6th Trisakti Management Game National Business Plan Competition. Meanwhile, the winner in the game was gained by the team from Prasetiya Mulya Business School and the third was Trisakti University Team.
In the competition held in mid-October 2010, the three UGM students offered the idea to use raw material of water hyacinth for making tissue. The idea started from the abundant supply of water hyacinth in Indonesia that has not been much used. Therefore, the students initiated to make tissue from weeds called Eco Tissue.
Lisa Novita Anggraeni said that the utilization of water hyacinth in tissue making aims to reduce the use of tree fiber as raw material in tissue making. This is expected to minimize logging. “Up to now, tissue is made from tree fiber. The more tissue used, the more trees cut,” Liza explained.
Liza added that water hyacinth tissue business not only prevents environmental damage from massive logging, but also improves social welfare of those who live around the water hyacinth habitat. “The expectation is that water hyacinth tissue business can empower the society,” she explained.
