Director of Seedling Cultivation, Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, Ir. Abubakar, S.E., M.M, had the opinion that poultry industries play a very important role. It is the major role in Indonesian husbandry development.

It is proven that 65,7% of total husbandry households in Indonesia contributes to improve income and job opportunity. The role has at least given contribution as much as 65% of total production of national meat. “Meanwhile, contribution of purebred chicken eggs is 70,1% of total production of eggs,” said Abubakar in National Seminar Prospect and Challenge of Poultry Business Year 2011 after Merapi Eruption, Saturday (26/2) at Faculty of Animal Sciences UGM.

Although sources of animal protein can be easily accessed by people, it is potential to increase malnutrition. Achievement of animal protein consumption of 5,79 grams per day is still under nutrient sufficiency standard. “The standard should be 6 grams per capita per day,” he said.

In the seminar initiated by Faculty of Animal Science UGM with P3Y, APAYO and APB, Abubakar criticised that import of corn, soybean meal, fish flour, bone flour and vitamins as main ingredients of animal feed becomes the basic problem of poultry industries in Indonesia. Moreover, there are also 100% import of GPS seeds - both broiler and layer - and partnership program of poultry business which has not run optimally. Besides, there is indication of market structure imbalance both in input and output markets which place small breeders in weaker position.

“Meanwhile, commercial husbandry industries are still very vulnerable to external fluctuations such as economic crisis, livestock epidemic, such as Avian Influenza, and global financial crisis,” he said.

Therefore, Abubakar expected the policy of poultry in Indonesia can keep the balance of supply and demand of DOC. The policy in the implementation is expected to manage input of seeds in accordance with the need, calculating potentials of DOC FS (broiler and layer) production and can coordinate between seeders and breeders. “Besides, government is expected to encourage breeders to be independent. Then, their business scale can develop and they want to join to produce their own production input, such as DOC and feed,” said Abubakar.
