As many as 107 undergraduate and diploma students receive scholarship from Rumah Zakat Infaq Shodaqoh (RZIS) UGM. The scholarship was symbolically handed over by UGM Rector, Prof. Ir Sudjarwadi, M. Eng., Ph.D., and Deputy Director of RZIS UGM, Drs. Dumairy, MA, to two student representatives on Wednesday (23/3), in UGM Hall. On the occasion, it was also handed over scholarship to 15 students of high school students in the Yogyakarta.
RZIS UGM provides scholarship to students amounting 250,000 rupiah per month. The scholarship is given during the period of education at UGM with evaluation per semester. Meanwhile, for high school students, the scholarship given each is 125,000 rupiah per month during the education in high school with evaluation per semester.
The scholarship recipients are 2 students of Faculty of Biology, a student at Faculty of Pharmacy, 17 students of Faculty of Cultural Sciences, 14 students of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and 4 students of Faculty of Geography. Furthermore, 7 students of Faculty of Law, 7 students of Faculty of Dentistry, 7 students of Faculty of Forestry, 8 students of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, 2 students of Faculty of Agriculture, and 3 students of Faculty of Animal Sciences. Furthermore, 2 students of Faculty of Psychology, 8 students of Faculty of Agricultural Technology, 14 students of Faculty of Engineering, and 13 students of Vocational School.
Deputy Director of RZIS UGM, Drs. Dumairy, MA, said that RZIS UGM during the last two years has provided 152 scholarships to UGM students, 45 scholarships in 2010 and 107 in this year. In addition, RZIS also provides scholarships to 15 high school students, as well as compensation for elementary and junior high students.
Dumairy mentioned that up to now, RSIZ has about 270 million rupiah of funds collected from zakat, donated alms, and endowments within UGM. The biggest allocation is for UGM scholarship. "However, we also routinely provide compensation to 5 orphanages around Yogyakarta, the poor and wayfarer," he explained.
UGM Rector, Prof. Ir. Sudjarwadi, M. Eng., Ph.D., in the occasion expressed his gratitude to UGM community who has been distributing zakat through RZIS so as to provide scholarship for UGM students. "Hopefully, this scholarship is really a blessing and may be given on an ongoing basis," he hoped. Rector also expected that these scholarships encourage students to get more achievements and improve their academic grades.
Director of Operations RZIS UGM, Taufikur Rahman, SE, MBA, added that RZIS UGM is the embodiment of one of the pillars of three University’s responsibilities, particularly community service. RZIS attempts to optimize the role of UGM in the community, especially in the field of social humanity.
Meanwhile, Nurul Amalia Rusli, one of the scholarship recipients from Faculty of Biology, said that the scholarship would be used optimally to improve academic achievement. "I will use this scholarship as good as possible. The hope eventually I can become muzaki (zakat payer), no longer becoming mustahiq (zakat recipient)," said Nurul.
RZIS UGM is an institution of UGM amil zakat which was inaugurated by Rector of UGM on 22 September 2008.
