YOGYAKARTA – The number of Professors at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) continues to grow, now reaching to 438 people, consisting of 274 active professors, 36 emeritus professors, and one extraordinary professor. Meanwhile, other 127 professors will retire.
Taking place at Senate Hall on Friday (25/3), UGM released five professors who have retired and welcomed a new professor. The four professors on retirement are Prof. Dr. Kaelan, M.S. (Faculty of Philosophy), Prof. Dr. Siti Ismijati, SH, CN. (Faculty of Law), Prof. Dr. Bostang Radjagukguk, M.Agr.Sc., Dip. Trop. Agron. (Faculty of Agriculture), Prof. Dr. Ir. Kamiso Handoyo Nitimulyo, M.Sc. (Faculty of Agriculture), and Prof. Dr. Ir. Kabul Basah Suryolelono, Dip. H.E., DEA. (Faculty of Engineering). Meanwhile, the new professor is Professor. Dr. Ir. Rustadi, M.Sc. (Faculty of Agriculture).
In his speech, a state affairs expert, Prof. Kaelan, criticized the difficulty of achieving level of emeritus professor for a retired person because of the strict requirements that must be met. "There are 14 conditions to be met as emeritus professor. In other countries, this emeritus title is a form of respect and appreciation for the sciences that they have developed," he said.
In Indonesia, becoming an emeritus professor requires much writings of books and research publications in journals. In fact, the role of a professor is not only based on the publications, but they should develop science, as what had been done by the late Prof. Sardjito (former Rector of UGM) and Prof. Notonagoro (Pancasila expert). "Up to the end, they always develop sciences," he added.
Meanwhile, representing the new professor, Prof.Dr.Ir. Rustadi, M.Sc., said that his professorship is a mandate that is not easy. Responsibility to develop the nation and UGM as a research university is one of the challenges. "Hopefully, in carrying out this mandate, I could expand my knowledge in the field of fisheries science that could give benefits for the state and national welfare," he said.
