YOGYAKARTA- Dozens of Japanese students studying at UGM raised funds from 9-10 April 2011 for survivors of earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan. The fund raising event entitled Charity for Japan took place at Ambarukmo Plaza.
According to Committee Chairman, Tetsuma Suminoue, to raise funds for the survivors of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan some events were held, including performance and exhibition, including Japanese dance Bon O Dori, D’joh, Tepatepe (accoustic), Iaijutsu, Aikido, Karate, Kenjutsu and Kendo.
"At least there will be 8 stands provided for the fund raising event,” Tetsuma said alongside the event on Sunday (10/4).
Apart from performance, visitors can also see pictures of the earthquake and tsunami that had taken the lives of thousands of victims. The photos attracted the attention of the audience. In the photos viewers can see the magnitude of the impact of the tragedy.
"We learned that the earthquake and tsunami that damaged the Fukhusima nuclear reactor had taken the lives of thousands of people and destroyed thousands of buildings and houses,” he said.
In the event there are some other booths displaying Kanji calligraphy, Tanabata, Yukata, traditional Japanese play such as shogi, igo, and daruma otoshi, also a booth for learning Japanese language. Tetsuma explained that due to the huge disaster, thousands of people were homeless. The fund that will be raised will be distributed to the people through the Indonesian and Japanese governments.
"The funds we raised in the Charity or through a bank account will be immediately distributed to the people of Japan who are affected by the earthquake and tsunami,” he concluded.
