Those are part of the speech during the Earth Day celebration delivered by “Kuriman” Sepnu Heryanto, a character in the Mbangun Deso TV play who is also a member of staff of Faculty of Geography UGM on Thursday (21/4). In his poem he called on members of community in the Faculty to be wise towards the earth.
Meanwhile, Dean of the Faculty of UGM, Prof. Dr. Suratman, M.Sc., in his speech said that the Faculty was making some efforts in saving the earth and environment. One of those is by developing school based on disaster mitigation and environment management. “It is expected that the school (Swaliba) can awaken education sector in disaster preparedness,” Suratman said.
Some schools that have developed a curriculum based on disaster mitigation and environment management are SD Nogopuro, SMP 1 Sleman, and SMA 2 Klaten. “The school will also be pioneered in Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Bali, Banjarmasin and Kupang. The target is that similar schools will be established across Indonesia,” he explained.
Swaliba has officially been released alongside the opening of the Earth Day celebration (21/4). The launching was marked with signing of a scripture by the Dean. Swaliba guide book, maps and routes of evacuation route were also handed over to students and staff.
In order to celebrate the Earth Day on 22 April and Environment Day on 5 June, Faculty pf Geography runs a series of events for three months, including planting 1,000 trees in the banks of Kali Kuning, social service in Glagahharjo hamlet (22/4), sympathetic action at Bunderan UGM (24/4), and talkshow Iqra: Reading Nature and Earth (27/4).
In May, there will be village cleaning activities and volcano tour (1-5/5), study research on shelters for Merapi eruption survivors (1-15/5), and graphic design and photo exhibitions (22/5), disaster preparedness simulation (26/5), WIT earth theatre performance at TBY (28/5), and field trip to Bayat area of Klaten (28-29/5) while in June, speech competition on environment (3-5/6), music concert Eartherity Fest 2011 (5/6), and talkshow Climate Under Our Hand (6/6).
