Various steps were taken by various groups in commemorating the Earth Day which falls on April 22th, such as what is conducted by Silvagama Mapala (nature lover student) of Faculty of Forestry UGM in cooperation with the Tree Climbing Community to distribute 200 fruit tree seedlings for free to the public. The distribution of tree seedlings is conducted in the Ground Zero of Yogyakarta on Friday (22/4).
According to Tami, a Silvagama member, this activity is conducted to raise the awareness of citizens to be more concerned about the environment and the earth. The distribution of tree seedlings on the Earth Day this time is intended to introduce the importance of planting trees considering the condition of Yogyakarta, which has a fairly high level of pollution.
"By planting trees it is expected to reduce pollution levels in urban areas not only in words but also in the form of real action. Earth could no longer wait, we must move now. To plant trees, to love the life," she explained.
Several action were also conducted such as: 1000 signatures and messages for the earth, the distribution of booklets of how to plant trees, leaflets about conservation and the environment and tree climbing at Hall of Serangan Umum 1 Maret Monument by the Tree Climbing Community.
Tami added, the action to commemorate the Earth Day is one part of a series of environmental education held by Silvagama by involving high school students in Yogyakarta that are incorporated in Silvagama Green Community.
