Faculty of Law UGM together with the Institute of Professional Language and Education (LBPP) LIA Yogyakarta held a Workshop on Tips & Tricks Doing TOEFL and EPT on Thursday, May 12, 2011. At least 120 students from graduate program of Faculty of Law UGM followed this activity.
The event taking place in Multimedia Room of the Faculty was opened by Sandra Dini Febri Aristya, S.H, M. DPSI. Recherche, as representative of Faculty of Law and LCDC of Faculty of Law UGM. "Make TOEFL as a challenge for you. There is an adage saying if a barrier is used as a challenge, then we can be someone who is step forward," Sandra said, a young lecturer graduated from France giving opening remarks.
Meanwhile, Drs. Yulius Argo Prasetyo, the Branch Head of LBPP LIA Yogyakarta, gave a glimpse material of TOEFL and EPT. For about 30 minutes, he explained in detail about TOEFL. He also explained one type of test that is known today, i.e., EPT or Language Proficiency Test. "EPT is used in national scale, but still refers to the format of the TOEFL. EPT itself was first introduced by the LIA as the owner of the trademarks," said Yulius, an alumnus Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM Department of International Relations class 1991.
EPT requires a long process and cannot be achieved instantly, especially for those who do not have sufficient initial ability of English. "Thereby, studying EPT should be done continuously, either independently or with the help of mentors," he added.
Drs. Dwi Hatmanta Budi Wibawa, Head of Academic Affairs of LBPP LIA Yogyakarta, on the second session discussed EPT questions in detail and gave tips and tricks to answer the questions. EPT consists of several materials, among others, listening comprehension, structure, and reading comprehension.
Painstakingly, Dwi Hatmanta explained various simulations, smart tips and tricks in working out each set of tests, such as identifying the right keywords when doing listening questions, visualization in conversation, and reading answer choices first .
Many participants felt the benefits of this workshop. The workshop that began at 09.00 gave much accurate information in order to prepare for TOEFL and EPT. The activity was closed with souvenir handover from LCDC by Agustina Merdekawati, S.H, LL.M to Drs. Yulius Argo Prasetyo, representative of LBPP LIA.
