Directorate General of Higher Education in cooperation with UGM held socialization of Library e-journal database. The event was held on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at UGM Library. On that occasion, Head of Program and Evaluation Sub-Directorate, Directorate General of Higher Education, Sumartono, and Dwi Janto from Jasatama, attended the event.
Sumartono said that there have been significant increases in the nomination of scientific papers to the Directorate. This increase occurred since the Directorate subscribed to various databases in the year 2009. In that year, it was noted the proposals submitted were as many as 23,979 and increased to 50,031 in 2010. "The data is quite encouraging because it can boost the target which will be achieved by the Directorate of Higher Education in the field of research. Therefore, in 2011 the Directorate is committed to extend the subscription of online databases Proquest, EBSCOhost, and Gale," he said.
The various databases subscribed as a form of facilitating the provision of scientific references in the form of e-journal for universities. This is done to improve the quality of scientific periodical papers/ journals, textbooks, and dictates in universities, to develop appropriate technology, and new scientific inventions produced by researchers and lecturers in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Janto from Jasatama, said that a number of very rapid developments of database allow academic community to obtain the desired information. Proquest, EBSCOhost, and Gale databases are now equipped with Indonesian-language platform to help searching for scientific papers. Journal articles in the databases are also presented in abstract citation, pdf, and fulltext formats. Other facilities are also available, such as alert or notification within each online database that automatically notifies to the personal email address on the required subjects / keywords. In addition, there are also RSS feed that can be set for notification in personal blogs.
On the occasion, Janto also gave some tips on how to get high qualified databases and journals. "If you choose qualified databases and journals can be made from the embargo (delay) of a journal. The more delay, the cheaper the database because what we see is the old journals. It is also important to see the main journals of a field of science, what is included in that database," he said.
In the journal socialization attended by representatives of universities in Yogyakarta, login and password for each university were shared. It is intended that the subscribed databases of Directorate of Higher Education can be accessed by the academic community in each university easily and cheaply.
