UGM once again is triumphant at the national level. Two awards are achieved. First, UGM achieves the first champion in the political debate, essay, and caricature competitions in Java. Secondly, UGM is the second winner of national education debate. For Java-level political debate contest, the competition was held in Bogor from 28-29 May. UGM team was represented by M. Reza S. Zaki (Faculty of Law, 2008), Gresika Bunga S. (Faculty of Economics and Business, 2009), and Faisal Arief K. (Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, 2009).
According to Gresika, the competition is an annual event that has been held 4 times. In the process prior to the quarterfinals, the participants are required to attend essay selection on the theme of corruption eradication in Indonesia. From the selection, eight teams enter the quarterfinals of Java-level political debate.
Furthermore, Gresika explains that in the political debate competition, UGM competes with Brawijaya University Malang in the quarter-finals, with the theme of pros and cons on media controlled by politicians. For the semifinal, UGM competes with University of Indonesia (UI) with the theme of pros and cons on death sentence for corruptors. In the final round, UGM competes with the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) with the theme of pros and cons on the Parliament building. "Based on the results of the judging, UGM came first place, IPB became the second winner, and the UI became the third winner," Gresika explained.
Second Place at the National Education Debate Competition
At the same time, UGM also won second place in the national education debate contest organized by the Faculty of Islamic Studies (FIAI) of Islamic University of Indonesia in the series of Islamic Education Festival 2011. Competitions that were held are: Arabic Debate Competition, Education Debate Competition in Indonesian Language, Speech Contest, Essay Competition, and Teaching Competition.
UGM team that was represented by the BEM KM sent a delegation to Indonesian Debate Competition with the theme of education. Indonesian Debate Competition was followed by several universities throughout Indonesia. The competition consists of three stages, namely the preliminary round, semifinals and finals. From the preliminary round selection, there are three teams being qualified for the semi-finals. UGM team is represented by Dewa Mahendra (Faculty of Law, 2009), Gunarko (Engineering vocational school, 2009), Wida Widayati (Faculty of Cultural Science, Department of French Literature, 2010).
In the Indonesian language debate, UGM competes with the State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga in the semifinals, with the theme of pros and cons on the Urgency of National Education Agency as Education Authority Holder. In the final, UGM competes with University of Indonesia with the theme of pros and cons on urgency for IT elementary school in the modern era. Based on the results of the judging, UGM finally won the second place, while the UI became the first winner. Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University won the third place.
