YOGYAKARTA- The spirit should be maintained. This should be emphasised to be able to change one’s fate and careers. That was emphasized by the CEO of General Electric (GE) Indonesia, Dr. Handry Satriago, in a Guest Lecture forum, "Leadership and Globalization", held in the 5th floor of MM UGM building.
In an event attended by hundreds of students of MEP and MM UGM, Handry gave insight to students about leadership to lead a company as well as GE Indonesia.
Handry made himself an example. At 17, he suffered Lymphoma that caused paralysis. As a result, Handry who was formerly active in various activities, such as theater and rock climbing, had to use the wheelchair. He admitted that he was in despair before finally being persuaded by her parents to revive his spirit to life. "Formely, I just locked up myself in my room and regretted about what happened, but luckily my father encouraged me so I returned to live with passion and joy," Handry recalled, Friday (12/8).
Handry said to always think optimistically and appreciate life; life can be lived in more easily and more enjoyably. In addition, the courage to have different opinion and new ideas have strongly supported the creation of success.
Handry said his meeting with the CEO of GE’s world who was at the time still emphasized that ‘Indonesia is the future market’. At that time, only he who openly dared to ask him that the vision was often delivered in a variety of opportunities. According to Handry, vision without any concrete efforts would remain useless. "Many people thought after I asked that question, I’d be dismissed from the company. But luckily I was not and, in fact, six months later I became CEO of GE Indonesia," Handry said, applauded by the students.
Not only that, in front of the students, the man who was born in Pekanbaru, June 13, 1969 also said that being subordinates/ followers (followership) is always bad. Being a good followership is very supportive to the leaders to promote the company/ organization. This theory or concept is admitted by Handryas not as strong as the concept of leadership.
However, according to Handry, those two things are interrelated and mutually supportive. "The company that introduces the followership to its employees since the beginning will surely reap a huge advantage, both material and immaterial. In addition, by having employees as effective followers will also keep the company development on the current and the future times," he said.
Talking about GE, Handry mentioned that it currently has more than 300,000 employees in 100 countries. GE is still focusing on developing innovations in the field of energy technology, health, transportation, and infrastructure. GE is the only listed company in the Dow Jones Industrial Index since the index began in 1896 to the present.
